Gimme Fives!

Getting there without the [info]altfriday5
From the [info]altfriday5:

1. How old were you when you started walking or biking to some places (e.g. school or a friend's place) on your own? What were the circumstances? 8? I don't know. As soon as I was allowed to ride my bike off of the street I lived on, I did.

2. How old were you when you started taking public transit on your own? What were the circumstances?I used to take the shuttle bus to campus when I was in college. I've never lived near relaiable, convienient public transit (i.e., I'm always lived in or around Houston).

3. How old were you when you first took a long-distance trip (unaccompanied on the bus, train, or plane, even if you were met at your destination) on your own? What were the circumstances? Probably as a teenager, but only driving across Houston.

4. This set of questions was inspired by a news story about a woman leaving her nine-year-old in downtown Manhattan to find his own way home on transit and the controversy it caused (http://news.aol.com/newsbloggers/2008/04/07/is-9-too-young-to-ride-the-nyc-subway-alone/ ). What's your reaction to this story? Good for them. I'm sick of this culture of fear that surrounds me. If we let fear control our lives, then our lives are wasted empty things. Good for the kid, and good for the mom.

5. At what age would or did you let your kids (hypothetical kids, if you don't have them) do those things where you live now? I don't know. Every child is different; I'll have to watch mine and see when he is ready.

Singing mighty protest songs In the [info]fridayfiver

1. When were you born? July, 1969

2. What's your favorite photograph? I don't have one.

3. What's the longest distance you've run? A couple miles.

4. What is familiar? The 40 miles of my commute.

5. What do you count on? Nothing; I take things as they come.

[info]thefridayfive offers change.

Theme: Change

1. If you had the ability to legally change your name, would you? No.

2. What do you with with change that you receive from banks/purchases/find on the ground? buy diet Cokes from vending machines

3. If you could travel back in time to change the course of one historical event, what event would it be? I can't begin to imagine. Anything changed in the past would alter the present I live in, and there is no way to know whether it would be for the better or not. Didn't anyone watch "The Butterfly Effect?"

4. Would you rather live a safe, stable, moderately interesting life or one where every day was dangerous, volatile, and different? Safe, please.

5. What do you think you'll be remembered for when you die and, if you could, would you change it to something else? I doubt I'll be remember at all.
